In some Nikon cameras, gridlines can be turned on in the viewfinder through an item in the menu.  These gridlines will not show up in the final picture but they are a guide for using the rule of thirds in framing photographs.  The intersecting lines in the viewfinder gridlines suggests where the subject should be positioned for a balanced and more pleasant photo composition.

The gridlines in the Nikon camera viewfinder can also help the photographer in keeping the horizons level and keeping the vertical elements of the picture straight.  Some good pictures have been taken with the horizon slightly above or below the middle of the viewfinder’s frame.  Some photographers produce pictures with the horizon in the center of the image.
